Their version of the Olympics was in honor of their gods. They also had other huge sporting events such as the Isthmos Games (held every 2 years) and the Pythian Games (held every 4 years). The Olympics have grown greatly since then. First, women are now allowed to compete, and it has grown from 1 day to a few weeks long. Also, there are many more events then there used to be. There were only a few events in the Olympics back then, a few of them were different length foot races, wrestling, boxing, pancratium (a mix of the two), horse racing, discus, and long jumps.
Social Equality in Athens and Sparta Athens had a completely different society than Sparta. They had completely different views on the way that people should be treated. This led to the two empires ending up very different. One difference in the equality was the way women were treated. Athenian women were kept at home and were considered property of their husbands. This is completely different from Sparta, where the women were treated more as equals to men. The Athenian women were responsible for spinning, weaving, and other arts. Spartan women could participate in sports and were taught to read and write. Weaving and other arts were usually left for the lower classes. Another difference was the education for the kids. In Athens, boys were taught math, music, poetry and how to write. The girls get as much formal education, but they learned how to make different kinds of arts. In Sparta, the boys were taken from their parents at age 7 and only learned about warfare. They were not given enough food so they had to steal food. Girls on the other hand learned how to write, and participated in gymnastics and different athletics. The Spartans were obviously more concerned with war and fighting than the Athenians. These differences are why these two empires, which started out very similar, are now remembered to be very different.
